Why Do I Stop Myself? How to Reclaim Your Creativity

Sandy Buck – Saturday, Feb 27 – 12:30 – 2:00 pm

SandyBuckBeing creative is a skill that is too often perceived as a specialty, and left to others who paint, draw, sew or cook. How many times do we hear “I am not creative”? But creativity is not an exclusive talent left to the few. Every single person is creative—we are born with it and we use it every day. In this playshop, you will reconnect with the skillset you may be denying—your creativity! You will be opened up to simple possibilities, reshaping the way you see things. Trying something new can lead to amazing outcomes in your personal and professional life.

Sandy Buck left Vancouver in 2007 at the growing height of her career as a costume designer in the film, tv and theatre industry to live in a rural setting and pursue her passion for creative community building. She and her husband, Chad Hershler, started a family and a non-profit arts organization called Deer Crossing the Art Farm in Langdale, BC. Sandy brings a wealth of skills from a 20-year career working for arts organizations as a volunteer coordinator, youth programmer, event organizer, teacher and artist. She is also a performer, puppeteer, and one of the creative collaborators for the Rainforest Circus, an annual site-specific production on the Sunshine Coast. She embraces the creative process in all that she does.

Ack! I Don’t Know What to Say! Preparing Content for Your Website

Alison Taylor – Saturday, Feb 27 – 3:15 – 4:45 pm

alison-taylor-head-shot-mediumThere is a saying in the online world: “Content is King.” It won’t matter that your website has a beautiful design and uses the latest technology if the information you’re sharing on it isn’t compelling or complete or well organized. But how do we achieve that? Join Alison for a guided journey where we’ll identify which pages your website should have and how to write, format and organize them. If you’ve been stuck trying to write—or rewrite—your website, this workshop will offer the perfect launch pad. We’ll cover: identifying why you have a website and what you want it to achieve for you; whether to write in first person (I/we) or third person (he/she/they); which pages should exist on your website and how they should be organized and named in the menu; which pages to write first; how to choose the most important thing to feature on the home page; whether to be up front about the size of your micro-business; what kind of “voice” to use when writing—casual/friendly or formal/academic; how long paragraphs and pages should be; what pictures are suitable and compelling and where to find them affordably; focusing on the customer’s needs; and encouraging the customer to take the next step.

Alison Taylor founded Digital Dandelion Web Studio in 2005 (originally under the name Usable Web Designs). She brings to her work a unique combination of 20 years of software development experience (with a degree in Physics/Computing) and the visual perspective of an artist (with a degree in Visual Art). She enjoys coaching her clients through the process of website design and content creation and training them to maintain their new WordPress websites. She and partner Eddy Trampus also offer in-person hands-on Website Weekend Workshops. Her students and clients appreciate her patient, clear and detailed instruction, and her ability to communicate technical subjects in plain language.

If Not You, Then Who?

Performance by Lowry Olafson – Saturday, Feb 27 – 5:00 – 6:00 pm

Lowry-KeynoteWhen we honour our passions, our work and our lives become richer and more rewarding. But many people decide early on in life that that’s neither practical nor possible in the “real” world.

If Not You, Then Who? is a 50-minute musical keynote that challenges that. Singer-songwriter Lowry Olafson weaves stories and songs into a captivating journey that invites listeners to reconsider the question “Who do you think you are?” in a way that can transform their sense of what is possible.

Lowry knows this topic from the inside. He has toured the globe and released nine CDs on his independent label, River Records. In addition to his performing and speaking careers, he has led over 500 songwriting workshops for kids and adults and created theme songs with organizations, businesses and municipalities across Canada and the US.

Building Social Media Relationships—How To Grow Your Online Brand

Paul Poulsen – Sunday, Feb 28 – 12:30 – 2:00 pm

PaulPoulsenThe allure of social media is that it’s supposed to help you grow your business and your bottom line. You’ve signed up for a Facebook page and a Twitter account but now what? How do virtual updates generate value for your real world business? In this workshop, Paul will show you how to systemize what to post, when to post, and how to craft the perfect message. Focusing on Facebook and Twitter, he’ll show you how to automate your updates and how to optimize the time you spend tending to your digital followers. You’ll learn the best days and times to post to social media, how many times a day to post, where to find compelling content to share with your audience, how to implement a successful social media contest, 11 types of social media posts that drive interaction, and much more!

Paul Poulsen spent eight years as a creative writer for some of the most popular radio stations in Edmonton, Alberta before leaving broadcasting to focus on helping small- to medium-sized businesses build their online brands. As a content creator and social media consultant, he orchestrated grassroots digital campaigns that successfully lobbied for the redevelopment of Edmonton’s downtown core as well as legislative changes to some of Alberta’s heavy oil extraction regulations. Real estate brokerages, hotel chains, luxury retailers, car dealerships, television broadcasters, and major event planners have leveraged Paul’s expertise to grow their online influence and their real world businesses. Paul and his wife moved to Gibsons in 2014 and launched GibsonsPage.ca, a successful local news website. His most recent project (also Gibsons-centric) will be announced later this spring. Paul loves working with clients to help them discover their unique “sword in the stone”—the special superpower that separates them from their competitors. Once uncovered, social media campaigns flourish and the astounding influence of digital word-of-mouth becomes unmistakable.

Speak With Power and Presence

Katherine Scott – Sunday, Feb 28 – 3:00 – 4:30 pm

KatherineScottEntrepreneurs who are able to speak with confidence and presence about their business have a distinct edge. They more easily make connections and invite the response they want. So why do so many of them shy away from speaking as a way to build their business? Speak with Power and Presence is designed to help you take a crucial first step toward speaking in and about your business. Using an experiential approach, Katherine will guide you to craft that oh-so-important opening line for your business story and deliver it with confidence and inner authority. Whether you’re speaking one-on-one, presenting a workshop, or delivering your message to a larger audience, imagine how your business could grow if you added speaking expertise as another way to attract your ideal clients.

Katherine Scott is a professional voice coach, singer, published author, and Past President of Morningstars Toastmasters club. Twenty years ago she began her career as a voice coach focusing more on the technical aspects of the voice with both singing and speaking clients. Through years of experience working with singers, presenters and professional speakers, she has learned that there is much more to speaking than technique, especially for entrepreneurs with a passion to make an impact. This realization has led her to develop a more comprehensive and holistic approach which merges voice, power and presence into a powerful communication style. She now applies her experience to inspire entrepreneurs to learn to speak effectively so they can attract the wider audience they want.
